Amidst the publicity around the tightening of the UK's entry requirements, there has been a quiet – and welcome – change for British citizens with dual nationality, who settled in the UK under the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS).
This is another exemption from the new requirement for British citizens to enter on a valid British passport. It will only benefit individuals who obtained British citizenship after being granted status through the EUSS, who continue to have an eVisa. It is not, for example, available to EEA citizens who have always held dual nationality and did not need to apply under the EUSS.
To be able to rely on this exemption, individuals must:
- log into their eVisa account before travelling to check their EUSS is still valid;
- still travel on a valid passport, or national identity card (if from the EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland); and
- ensure the ID document they wish to travel on is linked to their eVisa profile.
Example: You are a dual British/Greek citizen. You have lived in the UK for many years and obtained Settled Status under the EUSS in 2024. You then made a successful application for British citizenship and have your Certificate of Naturalisation, but do not yet have a British passport. You may continue to travel into the UK using your valid Greek passport, as long as it is linked to your EUSS eVisa.
