Upcoming change to English language requirements for work routes – effective 8 January 2026

From 8 January 2026, applicants seeking to enter the UK, or switch into, for the first time the Skilled Worker, High Potential Individual (HPI) or Scale-up routes will need to meet a higher English language standard. The required level will rise from B1 to B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

This change applies only to individuals making an initial application under these routes.

Those who already hold permission in one of these categories, and who previously met the B1 requirement when their visa was granted, will continue to be assessed at B1 when applying to extend their stay within the same route.

This update represents a significant shift in entry requirements, and organisations planning future recruitment should ensure they take this higher language threshold into account when assessing prospective candidates.
