Under the radar - ongoing LGPS consultation

The Government is consulting on various aspects of the LGPS (Local Government Pension Scheme) regulations which directly impact academies in two main areas. The proposals are:

  • That academy trusts that are split geographically across a number of pension funds are able to consolidate all of their schools into one administering authority; and,
  • that there would be no requirement for contractors to become admitted bodies in the LGPS on outsourcing - the academy trust would act as the “deemed employer” during the term of the contract.

The above changes provide a significant shift in how academies interact with the LGPS and suggest that substantial efficiencies will be seen if the changes are enacted. The consultation runs until 22nd December 2025.

The government knows that those individuals who serve our communities through giving their work lives to public service deserve a pension scheme that reflects their dedication and rewards their work. A good pension is not just about financial security, but also about fairness, equality, efficiency and access. The government cares about making the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) work better for the people it serves.
