Colleges collaborating to shape ethical, purpose-driven adoption of AI

Earlier this week Keith Smith, Chief Executive at Harrow, Richmond and Uxbridge Colleges (HRUC), wrote about the creation of a community of leaders focused on the adoption and advancement of AI in FE. Recognising that funding, time and capacity can have a dragging effect on colleges' adoption of AI, this new collaboration is intended to help colleges to come together, identify the issues and work out how they could be tackled.

Providing access to high quality education and training, equipping students with the skills they need to help make a better life for themselves and for society, is fundamental to what colleges are for. This mission requires colleges and students to have access to the right experiences and the best tools - and that these things should be available to everyone irrespective of background or personal circumstances.

There has been a lot of focus on how AI can make our daily lives more efficient and effective, but there also needs to be strong, ethical leadership to ensure that these opportunities are available to everyone.  As Keith says, we have a chance here for colleges to work together and shape an AI-enabled future that delivers for all.

The question is not whether FE engages with AI, but how we do so in a way that is strategic, inclusive and most importantly true to our values.
