The limitations of AI-based legal advice in an international context

An increasing number of solicitors' firms are using AI tools tailored for legal services. To ensure the accuracy of the AI advice, these tools limit the data sources to the software's in-house knowledge rather than searching across the World Wide Web. This also helps to prevent client data breaches.

However, as these AI tools work within specific data jurisdictions, the risk of hallucination increases when asking questions regarding foreign law if a UK law firm's AI only has access to UK case law and legislation. A hallucination, in this case, refers to a response generated by an AI tool that presents false or misleading information as fact.

This highlights the importance of consulting experienced legal experts when dealing with legal issues that span several jurisdictions.

If you require advice on succession planning for French assets, our dedicated Cross-Border Team, specialising in French law, are on hand to help.

Court systems and legal advocates have gotten in on the action. A 2024 Stanford University analysis found that three out of four lawyers plan to use generative AI in their practice, and the legal profession has explored how AI tools might increase access to justice.
