How to get inclusion right

This is a big topic, and one which the members of a panel examined in a breakout session at last week's Schools and Academies Show. The packed-out audience heard from leaders in their field, including:

  • Abigail Hawkins of SENsible SENCO;
  • Dr Anita Devi of TEAM ADL;
  • Stephen Steinhaus of Solihull Alternative Provision Multi Academy Trust; and
  • Dr Simon Witham who is the Trust Lead and Accounting Officer at Venn Academy Trust.

One of the messages which particularly resonated with the audience was around the need to try to get things right before pupils drop through the holes of the system, with Simon calling for bravery and challenge to the status quo.

As a country we are grappling with how we better support all of our children.  Few would say the current system is working flawlessly. These are hard issues to address, but educators up and down the country are giving it their all in an effort to do just that.

Stone King is committed to the sector and we have a dedicated team which is passionate about SEND and inclusion.  We have created a SEND Forum where educators and our lawyers can come together to explore the issues and come up with ideas to move us all forward together. If you would like to find out more about our SEND Forum, please contact Elizabeth Fortin, or visit our SEND Forum page.

We need strong system leadership to protect what is working and the confidence to change what isn't - Dr Simon Witham
