AI and the future of pedagogy, by Tom Chatfield has caused a bit of a stir in the last week or so. Whilst it is mainly concerned with higher education, students of the near future are of course already in our education system, and many of the issues still apply. I think the stir is due to many quotable statements but also how well AI is put in perspective, which seems to resonate more generally at this moment in time, both in terms of the long history of technological innovation and the complexity of local contexts in which we might use AI. Deeper thinking, stepping back, and being realistic are all very sensible for success, it seems to me.
My favourite statement from the paper is below, page 22. But there are three final recommendations, and the final one seems to me to be the most important point of the whole paper - to ensure that AI is “deployed and overseen in line with clear and regularly reviewed governance”. I have no doubt that in every Education setting, there is a wealth of valuable perspective on AI, and that by creating and engaging with groups of staff, young people, and even parents, SLT can tap into that wealth to inform policy and implementation, and thus own AI in their setting.
